The Institute of the 21st Century (i21c) incubates and provides a sustainable framework for unique, public benefit art projects. Operating with a small, dedicated team based in Los Angeles and New York, i21c is a project of the Pasadena Arts Councils EMERGE Fiscal Sponsorship Program, and ForYourArt provides a burgeoning infrastructure for the project’s initial stages.

Initiated in 2010, the Institute was started in the spirit of historian Eric Hobsbawm’s call to “protest against forgetting” those who have forever changed the landscape of contemporary culture. The current focus of i21c is an initiative to support planning for the stabilization, digital archive and ongoing production and distribution of Hans Ulrich Obrist’s Interview Project. Obrist’s invaluable discussions and interviews have been recorded over two decades on various electronic mediums; over 2,500 hours of recordings exist. i21c is in the process of digitizing the interview tapes.

Past i21c projects include Hans Ulrich Obrist’s The NOW Interviews and Cedric Price Installation at the 2010 Architecture Biennale in Venice, Italy, where Obrist sat down with over 40 architects in a six-day interview marathon; Hans Ulrich Obrist: Interviews, Volume II (Charta Date, 2010); the Protest Against Forgetting project, which launched Brief History of Curating (JRP, 2008); and the co-publication of Jeff Koons as part of Walther Koenig’s The Conversation Series (2012).

The projects of i21c are made possible through individual, corporate and foundation contributions and supporters.
